What's All The 'FLAP' About?!
A film on FLAP and bird collisions

Birds are hitting windows all over North America. The numbers of injured and dead are astronomical and even though birding is the second most popular hobby in North America, few people really seem to know about this problem. This video was created to raise awareness about the current and increasing danger posed to birds by windows. Volunteers for the Fatal Light Awareness Program are followed around Toronto, Ontario as they seek out the injured and dead. At all hours of the day, birds can be found stunned beside buildings, clinging to walls, flying frantically between high-rises, or simply lying dead on sidewalks.

The cause is two-fold with no easy solution. Dr Daniel Klem, Jr., the only ornithologist who has dedicated significant time researching this problem and raising awareness in North America, explains why birds fly into windows and tells us the danger is not just in cities but anywhere that birds and windows come into proximity of each other. And, based on more than 30 years of research, he now concludes that the problem is even bigger than he first thought. This is significant because birds play a very important role in the ecosystem yet many species are in decline. In the video, meet the birds and see the problem for yourself while you meet some of the people who are trying to help them. Learn why windows are a problem and how we can try to make the world safer for our feathered friends.
